Seated inversion benefits include reduced strain on ankles, knees or hips while inverting. Getting in and out of a seat tends to be easier. It also is easier to rotate and tilt the chair if you're concerned about that.

The main downside is price. Many chairs or seated model are as expensive or more expensive than the higher-end tables. Is it worth it? That depends. If ankle, knee or hip pain is keeping your from enjoying the benefits of inversion therapy, I'd say yes. Comfort was definitely considered in the design of this chair. It has a padded chair with adjustable back rest as well as padded, rolled front ankle and knee supports. This chair comes with an adjustable safety lap belt so you will feel secure while inverting.

Most users feel that this chair is sturdy. Several users commented on how quick and easy it was to assemble. The main issue that some users have with this chair is the safety strap that comes across your thighs which some find uncomfortable. They suggested placing a pillow between your legs and the strap. This product comes with a one-year frame warranty and also a 90-day parts warranty.

This product does need some assembly. However, most users reported that it was quite easy to put together. Several users have commented that the chair is so comfortable they’ve almost fallen asleep!

The majority of users also felt that this product was well built and would last them quite a while. Some of the taller users reported that it was not built to fit them and that their head hung past the end of the chair and was not supported during inversion. The product set up dimensions are 65in H x 26in W x 49in L and it’s foldable for storage. The folded dimensions are 80in H x 26in W x 17in D. Foldability is always a nice feature. Not everyone has the room to leave their table out all the time or wants to look at it in the corner.

This table includes an ergonomically designed ankle locking system. The ankle locking system has a "Palm Activated" ratchet to ensure comfort. There are also adjustable safety tether straps so you can control your maximum angle of inversion. So you’ve just bought your first inversion table and now you’re thinking to yourself, “Well, how do I use it?” It can’t be as simple as just laying down on it, can it? Well, almost. This guide will teach you how to use an inversion table. Now we don’t suggest that you just hop on the table and go into a full 180° inversion. Instead, this step-by- step guide will explain how a gradual inversion and regular use will provide the best results.

How To Use An Inversion Table

Step 1

The first step in using your inversion table is making sure it is put together correctly. Most tables will need some assembly. Depending on the manufacturer, they may include an instruction booklet or video. Make sure you follow each step closely. You’re going to be hanging upside down on it, so make sure all the bolts are tightened correctly. If you’re not handy, get some help.

Once set up, make sure to place the table on a flat, secure surface with lots of room for the table to move freely. You don’t want to bang into the wall on your first inversion.

Step 2

Before use, you may need to adjust the table to your height. Once done, stand with your back against the table and put your feet in the footrests. Each table should include a safety device or strap to ensure your feet stay locked in. Follow the directions on how to use the safety device. It’s a good idea to try the ankle straps before you’re in them to make sure you know how they work.

Once you’ve got your feet in, give a tug with your ankles before inverting to make sure you’re secure. Make sure that any straps are not too tight or too loose around your ankles. Now it’s time to invert!

Step 3

Before inverting, decide on which angle you’d like to start at. If you’re new to inversion, start with a gentle 20 degree inversion and work up from there. Many tables include a mechanism to pre-set how far you can go so set that first. Most tables also include safety handles for you to hold on to while you invert. Grab on to these handles and slowly lean back. You do not want to go too quickly.

Step 4

For beginners, try 2-3 minutes at a time until you are comfortable. You might find it strange or disorienting to be at a tilt, so it’s best to go slow. Try using your inversion table twice a day, between the angles of 20 degrees to 60 degrees, until you are comfortable with that angle. Once you are comfortable, you can increase your inversion angle and time spent on the table. Go slowly and try increasing 10 degrees at a time.

Step 5

You can stop at 60 degrees or progress to full inversion. You don’t have to fully invert to get results. It’s up to you and how you feel. Step 6

Once you feel you have stretched out fully, grab onto the safety handles and rotate yourself to an upright  position. Again, go slowly! Going too fast can make you dizzy. Take a break for a few seconds once upright to make sure you’re not dizzy or light headed. Once you feel stable, undo the safety devices holding your feet in place.

Step 7

Repeat the above steps on a daily basis or even twice per day once you’re used to it. Using your table only once or twice will provide limited benefits. The real benefits come from regular daily use over time.

Are you considering using an inversion table but have some reservations about it? Perhaps, you’re wondering what exactly it’s meant to achieve and if it will work for you. Those were the kinds of concerns I had and I was glad to find useful information that led me to decide whether to use an inversion table.

Here, I'll share what I've learned. I'll go through some of the advantages, as well as some of the possible downsides. You other concern might be: “Are inversion tables dangerous?” I have included some tips to help you avoid the dangers of inversion table use and to help ensure you reap maximum benefits from it.

Inversion Table Pros and Cons

The Pros

There are research backed benefits to using an inversion table or chair. Inversion affects every aspect of your body – from providing more oxygen-rich blood for your brain to improving lung function and cleansing the sinuses. Inversion also improves digestion and increases the collagen content of your bone-supporting ligaments. Here’s some more good news about inversion.


History of inversion. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, used inversion to ease back pain in his patients nearly 2500 years ago! Even then, health leaders recognized that reversing the effects of gravity can have beneficial effects for spine and muscle health. Inversion has definitely withstood the test of time.

An inversion table soothes back pain. The Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association published the results of a study titled “Adaptation Tilt Table Lumbar Traction”. The study concluded that after a series of eight inversion table treatments, almost 90% of patients showed improvement in a range of back pain related complaints.

Inversion is an effective non-invasive treatment. Another study, this time conducted by New Castle University (UK), found that by using inversion therapy, just over 75% of the study’s participants who suffered from disc related low back pain, were able to avoid surgery and other invasive treatments.

Athletes benefit too. Inversion therapy can enhance joint health and provide stress relief. Many endurance athletes use inversion to aid the return to blood from the legs, helping recovery. Many athletes also use inversion tables for core strengthening exercises. Inversion can help to detoxify your body. Lymph circulates in the body pretty much in the same way as blood does. Its functions are to protect you against illness and to flush toxic substances out of the body. Inversion promotes lymph circulation by decompressing the spine and rehydrating the discs between the vertebrae.

The inversion table and inversion therapy, in general, pose little threat to the average person. But you should always seek medical advice before you begin to use inversion therapy. Remember, I'm just a guy who likes wellness and has used inversion successfully. I'm not your doctor or qualified to give medical advice, so ask your doctor first.

There are cases in which pre-existing medical conditions require that you get guidance on using the table. In other cases, the benefits of the therapy are outweighed by the risks.

Traction can lead to pulled muscles. Depending on your level of fitness and what you attempt to do on the table, there is the danger that over-exertion might cause you to pull a muscle.

Inversion can increase pressure in the eyes. Anyone who is suffering from glaucoma, conjunctivitis or retinal detachment should not invert. This can have serious consequences including blindness!

Hernias may be worsened. The stretching action can cause complications if you have either a hiatal and ventral hernia.

In full inversion your ankles feel the strain. Our ankles are not design to bear the full weight of our bodies. For some persons and in cases where the table provides insufficient ankle support, the result may be pain in the ankles, lower legs and knees. The same goes for hips and knees to a lesser extent.

People who should avoid inversion include women who are pregnant, anyone who has recently undergone back surgery, people with high blood pressure and certain types of back injuries. Others who should avoid inversion, or at a minimum check with their healthcare provider first, include:

  • An ear infection
  • Surgically implanted supports
  • Unhealed fractures
  • Swollen joints
  • Osteoporosis

If you are using anticoagulants or are obese, then the inversion table may lead to you developing further health problems.

Tips To Stay Safe

There is a tendency to think that the longer you invert on the table, the better. This is not true. As a beginner, 1 to 2 minutes a couple of times per day is fine. Afterwards, as your body becomes more used to inversion, you can do multiple 5-minute stints daily.

2. It isn’t necessary to do a full inversion for inversion therapy to work for you. It is generally accepted that a 60 degree tilt can offer all the benefits you are looking for.

3. Before using an inversion table, research on how to use it, how it will benefit you and what the possible disadvantages are. I provide a step-by-step guide here. Seek out as much expert advice as you can and always consult with your healthcare provider before you begin inversion.


Being suspended with your head lower than the rest of your body has proven health benefits but it is also has risks if you have certain conditions. The dangers of inversion table use can be reduced if you take steps to ensure your safety.

Have you been struggling with back pain and trying to avoid the route of surgery to treat it? I have, and like many other people I thought only surgery could provide a long-term solution.

Unwilling to go that route, I would take prescription painkillers trying to head-off or relieve the back pain that was sure to follow my work out. I don’t like having to rely on medications for pain relief, so I started looking around for a more natural way to deal with my recurrent back pain.

Then I found out about inversion therapy and how it can successfully treat and prevent the type of pain I was in. But you can get much more out of your table than just lying there. I've put together some of my favorite exercises and stretches below.

Start With Partial Inversion

You can first attempt inversion table stretches while in a partially inverted position. This is a good way to get used to the different feeling of exercising and stretching while inverted. Begin by giving your body a gentle stretch as you are inverting. Help your body to focus the motion on your core muscles by twisting your torso side-to-side.

Try crossing one arm across your body to get a firm hold of the opposite handle of the table. Rotate your body so you are up on one shoulder, then give your body a stretch. Don’t try to do sit-ups in the partially inverted position. You can end up tipping yourself upright suddenly. Leave those for when you are able to do full inversions.

Full Inversion Exercises And Stretches


To do inverted crunches cross your hands on your chest or put them behind your head. Next lift your torso half way up to your knees. Hold and then slowly release. If you put your hands behind your head for these, be careful not to pull with your arms. This can crank your neck forward. Remember, we're trying to remove the pain, not make it worse!

Reverse Squats

If you wish to focus on strengthen your legs, then inversion table squats will do the trick. These really work  the hamstrings on the back of your legs. Grip the legs of the table and bend your knees, pulling yourself upwards. Remember, this is a leg exercise so use your arms for support and balance but don't pull too hard with your arms.


When you are ready to do sit-ups while fully inverted, start out in the same position as the crunches. You can try gripping the backs of your knees to give yourself a little extra lift. This is a tough exercise and one you'll probably have to work up to. Remember the idea is slow and controlled motion, not whipping yourself up with momentum. Don't forget you're on a table either, not the ground, so control is even more important.

The advantages of inversion table exercises for abs are well-known and so the temptation to try the sit-ups might be great. Listen to your body and if the strain of the sit-up is simply too much, stop. You can try it again when your body has developed more strength and is more used to working in the inverted position.

Focused Inversion Stretches

Neck Stretches

Exercise on an inversion table can also help to stretch your neck just by rotating your head side-to-side. Or, pretend you're drawing a small figure 8 with the top of your head. This moves your neck vertebrae gently in all directions. I have always found that this works wonders for tension headaches.

You can also give your neck a gentle stretch by resting your arms behind your head, right at the base of the skull. Gently (key word!) pull toward the top of your head to increase the stretch. You're already upside down using gravity so avoid pulling hard or you can create more pain than you fix.

Shoulders and Upper Back Stretches

Pain in the upper back often results from muscle tension and stress. Deep breathing and total relaxation while inverted can help to ease this. Also beneficial is to round your shoulders forward and then push them back. Stretching your arms overhead and gently arching your upper back can feel blissful!

Here's another favorite. Grab the handle with your left hand, gently pulling your left shoulder toward your feet. Reach over the top of your head with your right hand and gently pull your head to the right. This will stretch the left side of your neck and shoulder. Repeat on the other side. This feels great for end-of-the-workday shoulder and neck tension.​

Lower Back Stretches

Rock your pelvis slowly forward (away from the table) then backward or rotate your whole body side to side to help lessen lower back pain. While in full inversion, try placing both hands behind your head then arch your body up and away from the table.

If the sides of your lower back are sore, try this. Reach up over your head with your left arm. Reach as far as you can to the right with your arm straight. Now push your left hip to the left and take some nice deep breaths. You should feel a nice deep stretch all along the left side of your back and ribcage. Repeat on the other side.


Exercises in the partially inverted position are really quite easy to perform. Try out a few different types to see which are best suited for you. Remember to slowly return to vertical when the exercises are complete. This allows time for the blood flow to readjust and prevents dizziness. It's a good idea to rest in a horizontal position for a couple of minutes to assist with this.

Remember to start slowly with these and build up gradually. Do partial inversion stretches before you move onto full inversion exercising. It gives your body time to adjust. Otherwise, you might be setting yourself up for more discomfort. Pain control is an ongoing effort. Slow and steady wins the race. Best of luck and let me know how they work for you.

Symptoms of Sciatica

  • Lower back pain
  • Hip pain
  • Pain in one leg or the rear that is worse when sitting
  • Difficulty standing up due to a shooting pain
  • A constant pain on one side of the rear
  • Burning or tingling down one leg
  • Weakness along the nerve’s path from your lower back to your toes
  • Numbness that is not in the same location as the weakness
  • Difficulty moving a particular leg or foot
  • Coughing or sneezing that causes a quick jolt of pain

Causes of Sciatica

The most common cause is a herniated disc.  The discs, which cushion the vertebrae of the spine, serve as protection for the spinal cord. They allow you to bend, twist and enjoy the flexibility of a wide range of motion. A herniated one is damaged and presses on the nerves of the spinal cord.

Other less common causes of sciatica include:

  • Spinal stenosis - narrowing of the spinal passages through which the nerve runs
  • Spinal injury
  • Spinal infection
  • A tumor or other growth within the spine

Avoiding a Herniated Disc

It is not always possible to prevent sciatica once you have a herniated disc, but you can take steps to minimize your risk of developing a herniation. These include learning the correct posture for standing, sitting, driving and lifting. Along with these you should:

  • Consider getting a more supportive mattress
  • Get regular exercises
  • Ensure you stretch before and after you exercise

Consider An Inversion Table For Sciatica

An inversion table stretches and decompresses your spine by reversing the action of gravity on it. This relieves pressure on the nerve roots and discs while at the same time allowing fluid to flow into the discs and plump them back up. There are many other benefits of using an inversion table. These include:

  • Something as simple as stretching your arms over your head while inverted does a world of good as well.

The symptoms of sciatica may be worsened by the inactivity of standing, sitting or driving for a long time as well as by protracted bed rest. Heavy lifting and extreme twisting of your spine are also possible ways in which sciatica is made worse. Stretching on an inversion table can help to relieve the symptoms without the need for painkillers.

What Is Inversion Therapy?

Simply put, it is a form of traction. It is used in orthopedics as a way to mend bones or straighten the spine.
